Breastfeeding and Breast Implants
Some women are concerned that if they have breast implants, they will be unable to breastfeed, but this is not true, as recently demonstrated by celebrity mom and former Playmate Kendra Wilkinson. Wilkinson, former star of The Girls Next Door, shared fears that her breast implants would interfere with breastfeeding. But, after giving birth to a baby boy in early December her fears were put to rest as she began successfully breastfeeding within just a few days, a not-unusual delay.
Breast implants do not generally interfere with breastfeeding. Some women are naturally unable to breastfeed, and for most women, breast implants do not reduce their ability to breastfeed. Breastfeeding can be affected by some complications of breast augmentation, though, such as:
- Loss of nipple sensation can affect "let-down" response
- Increased nipple sensation can lead to pain in breastfeeding
- Infections after breast augmentation may affect milk ducts
These complications are infrequent, but should be considered.
Breastfeeding is one of many things you have to consider in deciding whether breast implants are right for you. If breastfeeding is vitally important to you, even a small risk might be too much for you, and you might wait until after having children to get breast implants. But if breastfeeding is less important to you, there is no reason why it should affect your decision on getting breast implants.
