The eyes command much attention because they are the focal point of our interpersonal contacts. Both the upper lid and lower lid can have excess skin and excess fat which is either caused by aging or heredity. The aging process plays a much more important role. The upper lid can have hooding and puffiness; the lower lid can have puffiness, as well as extra skin. Sometimes there is concomitant sagging of the eyebrows which may necessitate a brow lift as well. Increased lines and wrinkles of the lower lids may require Laser resurfacing.
The Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery) Procedure

The upper lid incision falls into the crease. That of the lower lid is just under the eyelashes, although sometimes it can be made on the inside of the eyelid (Transconjunctival approach).
Post-Operative Course
The stitches are removed at 4-5 days. There will be swelling and black and blue discoloration which may take 1-2 weeks to subside. Makeup and coverup can usually be started after the stitches are removed. It is important not to strain the eyes in the initial weeks following the surgery. Also, the eyes may initially be sensitive to light, as well as susceptible to tearing or dryness.
