Breast Implant Incision Types
New York City (NYC), Manhattan and all of New York (NY)
There are several types of incisions that can be used for your breast augmentation. The right incision for your procedure depends on your goals and needs. Before your breast augmentation, New York plastic surgeon Dr. George Lefkovits will discuss your incision options and recommend which is best for you.
Breast Crease
Known as the inframammary incision, this is the most common type of incision for breast augmentation. Dr. Lefkovits will create an incision just above the crease where your breast and rib cage meet. He will then create a pocket for your implant either over or under your chest muscle and insert your implant.
With larger breasts, the scar is hidden in your breast crease. It may be more visible on patients with smaller breasts. Either silicone or saline implants can be inserted with this type of incision.
Periareolar
This incision is made where your areola meets the skin of your breast. It is the second most common incision type for breast augmentation. Optimal for saline breast implants, the periareolar incision leaves minimal scarring.
Armpit
Also called a transaxilllary incision, this type is used less commonly than the above 2 types. One of the main benefits is no scarring around your breasts from the incision.
Belly Button
Technically called a transumbilical breast augmentation (TUBA) incision, this type of incision is often referred to as scarless because the incision is hidden in the folds of your belly button. It is the least commonly performed incision Only saline implants can be used for this incision type because they can be filled after placement. Proper placement with the TUBA incision is much more difficult.
