Breast Enlargement Incision Types
in New York City and Manhattan
All women are created differently and have different body types. If you desire to undergo breast enlargement surgery, your surgery may differ in many ways from other women undergoing the same procedure. At Park Plaza Center for Plastic Surgery in New York City, Dr. Lefkovits will conduct a thorough evaluation examining all procedural options including:
- Breast implant type
- Placement of the implant
- Incision type
Depending on your specific needs, Dr. Lefkovits will discuss with you the following incision types for your breast augmentation procedure. In most cases, the type of implant and the placement both help determine which incision is used.
Inframammary
The most common option is the inframammary incision, also known as a crease incision, which runs on the underside of the breast in the inframammary fold.

This option is frequently considered for silicone gel breast implants in order to account for a longer incision. The scar may be somewhat more visible, especially for women with smaller breasts that do not cover the fold very well.
Indications:
- Silicone gel or saline breast implants
- Easiest to place
- Above or below muscle placement
Periareolar
It is the second most common incision for breast augmentation surgery. The incision is placed in the dark part of the nipple, called the areola, at the transition point of the skin. The incision usually involves lowering the areola, is very small, and leaves minimal scarring.
Indications:
- Desire for minimal scars
- Saline breast implants
Transaxillary
The incision is made in the axilla, or armpit, and channels inwardly approaching the breast from the side. This approach helps achieve good symmetry when placing the breast implant inferior to the pectoralis muscle. This incision may be performed with or without an endoscope, a small guide that can be used to assist with the breast augmentation procedure.
Indications:
- Saline or silicone gel breast implants
- Desire for no scarring under the breast
- Below muscle placement
Transumbilical
The least common incision involves the umbilical approach. Also known as TUBA, the implants are placed with the help of an endoscope. While this incision leaves no scars on the breast, the placement is more difficult. The options must be weighed carefully during your initial consultation.
Indications:
- Saline breast implants
- Desire for no scarring around the breast
