Depressions on the face or body can be corrected with one's own fat. Lips can also be pumped with fat. The advantages include an ample supply, and the lack of allergenicity.
The main disadvantage is its temporary duration. However, newer techniques have increased their longevity often between 6-12 months, after which repeat injections are necessary. But autogeneous fat still lasts longer than other "non synthetic" injectable products.
The Operation
This operation is done under local anesthesia during which a very tiny incision is made in the donor site, usually the abdomen. The fat is then centrifuged and reinjected via fine needle cannulas.

Post-Operative Course
The patient is asked to massage the areas injected with their fingers several times a day. The patient can usually return to work almost immediately unless the lips were done in which case there may be moderate swelling for 3-4 days.
