Male Hair Transplantation
Serving Manhattan, New York, Long Island, New Jersey
Male pattern baldness affects more than 35 million men in the United States. Hair replacement is the most frequently performed operation on men. Whereas, there are different techniques for restoring hair including: scalp reduction, scalp lifting, flap surgery, as well as, non surgical methods such as: hair pieces and hair weaving, we feel that micro and minigrafting is the safest and most applicable. Prior to surgery it is important to get a detailed history including other family members' baldness, as well as the onset and progression of the hair loss. It is important to know whether the patients has tried any prior treatments, including Minoxidil or Propecia. Most important, perhaps, is understanding the patients's expectations and appreciating which bald areas are most bothersome. A careful evaluation is made of the donor site in the back of the scalp to ascertain both the quality of the hair, as well as, its extent as a donor site. The patient must be informed that hair restoration is usually done in three, and occasionally four stages with each stage four months apart. The operation is performed under local anesthesia with or without sedation. Strips of hair are removed from the back of the scalp. These are then cut into tiny one and three hair grafts which are then inserted into the bald areas via slits in the scalp.

Post-Operative Course
The patient has a bandage worn for one day, after which it is removed and the hair is shampooed. Henceforth, the patient can shower and gently shampoo and comb the hair. The patient can usually return to work after one day. The stitches from the back of the scalp are removed in ten to fourteen days. The next stage can usually be performed after four months.
