Breast Implants and Mammograms

Serving Manhattan, New York, Long Island, New Jersey

There are many important considerations to make when considering breast enlargement surgery. The implant type, implant placement, and the incision type, are just a few. The risks of complications must also be considered. Breast implants and mammograms continue to be a topic of consideration for any woman deciding to undergo breast augmentation.

What is a Mammogram?

A mammogram is a specialized x-ray of the breast used to identify issues and evaluate changes in breast tissue that may be a sign of breast cancer. Screening mammograms are conducted on a routine basis. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends a screening mammogram every one to two years after age 40, depending on your risk.

Mammograms are the best way to detect breast cancer early. When it is time to schedule a mammogram you should find a clinic that is used to dealing with breast implants and has a radiologist on staff trained to read the results.

Options for Breast Implants

Sub-pectoral, or under the muscle, placement of breast implants are less obstructive than supra pectoral implants. Make sure you mention that you have had breast augmentation so the technicians can make any necessary adjustments to the test. In some cases, your physician may advise you to undergo an MRI every few years as well, just to ensure nothing is missed.

Potential Problems

Breast cancer is the number one cancer killer of women. Every opportunity for early detection and treatment should be taken. In some instances, breast implants may hinder early detection through mammography or cause other medical problems for at risk women.

  • Delayed detection - Breast implants do not increase the chances of breast cancer, but they may interfere with its early detection.
  • Implant rupture - There is a slight increase in the chances of rupture due to the pressure placed on the breast during a mammogram. The potential risks of leakage or rupture must be weighed against the risk of breast cancer.
  • Avoiding mammography - Many women, some for the reasons above, may decide to forego mammography altogether in order to avoid implant rupture or the hassle of finding a qualified clinic.

Women wishing to undergo breast augmentation surgery need to know up front all of the ways it will affect their life. Since breast cancer screening is such an important and recurring event in the modern woman's life, it is a component to consider.

Dr. Lefkovits will discuss this and other important concerns during your pre-surgical screenings. To find out all the benefits and complications of breast augmentation surgery, please contact New York City cosmetic surgeon Dr. Lefkovits to schedule an initial consultation.
