Laser Skin Resurfacing for Women
New York City (NYC), Manhattan and all of New York (NY)
Women are constantly fighting the appearance of fine lines around their mouths and eyes. To minimize the appearance of these fine lines, Dr. George Lefkovits uses laser resurfacing, also called a laser peel.
Laser resurfacing may be performed on your whole face or in specific areas. Though it is still a very new procedure, this is a revolutionary technique that uses a laser beam to resurface your face, improve lines, creases, acne scars and blemishes. Evidence suggests that the laser is the most effective treatment for these problems, and this procedure has all but eliminated dermabrasion. In some cases, this method produces less bleeding, bruising and post-operative discomfort.
All resurfacing treatments work essentially the same way. First the outer layers of damaged skin are stripped away. Then, as new cells form during the healing process, a smoother, tighter, younger-looking skin surface appears.
Laser resurfacing is most commonly performed under local anesthesia with sedation. You will be awake but relaxed and will feel minimal discomfort. It is a quick procedure. After your surgery, you are likely to experience some mild swelling and discomfort. This is controlled with ice packs and medications.
Dr. Lefkovits uses a closed technique during post-operative care that uses special taping that is applied to the resurfaced areas for 5 days. This greatly minimizes pain and oozing.
Your new skin will usually remain bright pink to red in the weeks following your procedure. It is rare, but some patients may find that their healing skin is unusually sensitive to the makeup that was used prior to treatment. In such cases, makeup should be avoided until a substitute can be found.
Most importantly, in the months following treatment, it is important to protect the treated area from the sun until all color has returned to normal. Using sun protection regularly will help maintain your results and reduce the chance of any new sun damage to your skin. The final result from laser resurfacing may take several months to fully appear. Once the pinkness fades, patients usually notice a significant improvement in the quality of their skin and a fresher, smoother appearance. Results are long lasting, but not permanent. Laser treatment can usually be repeated; however, it is important to continue to protect yourself from the sun and follow a recommended skin-care regimen.
