Appreciable weight loss can result in sagging of the abdominal skin and weakening of the abdominal muscles. The operation basically tightens the muscles and removes excess skin. In the process, some stretch marks can also be removed.
The Operation
The operation is usually performed in Dr. George Lefkovits' Manhattan accredited certified operating facility, but in some cases it may be performed in the hospital. An overnight stay is not required. The surgery is performed through a lower abdominal incision, which is usually hidden. The navel is brought out through a new opening. The abdominoplasty may be combined with other operations such as liposuction.
Post-Operative Course
A light garment is worn for 4-6 weeks and strenuous activity is avoided during that time. Patients may return to work in 1-2 weeks.
